Drainage Improvement Works now underway at Church Pen, St. Catherine to impact traffic flow

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising the motoring public that major drainage improvement works now underway in the vicinity of the Masjid Mahdi (Muslim) Mosque along the Old Harbour main road, in St. Catherine will reduce the roadway to one-way traffic for a few hours tomorrow morning (Saturday, December 15).

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says activities to install a pipe culvert across the roadway will commence at 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 15. The works is expected to be completed by midday.

Mr. Shaw explains that traffic flow will be maintained in both directions as the culvert will be installed across one lane at a time. One lane of traffic will be maintained on the existing roadway while motorists heading in the opposite direction will be diverted on to an adjacent detour road.

Delays may result from the traffic changes. Motorists are therefore being urged to exercise patience and obey the instructions of posted warning signs and flag persons to prevent any undue challenges in traversing the area, particularly during peak hours.

The drainage improvement works are being implemented in two locations along the Old Harbour main road. Activities have also started in the vicinity of the Church Pen cemetery to widen a box culvert which will improve storm water flow and create wider driving lanes and sidewalks to ensure greater driver safety.

The works, which are valued at some 82 million dollars, form part of a larger flood mitigation project which will, under another phase, include works to address the perennial flooding at Big Pond.

The project is financed by the Government of Jamaica and the World Bank through the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) under the National Jamaica Disaster Vulnerability Project.
