The National Works Agency (NWA) has now completely reopened Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston to vehicular traffic. The road was closed yesterday as part of the preparations to mitigate the impact of Hurricane Matthew on the works now underway in the area.
Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that the temporary drainage feature that was constructed yesterday in preparation for the hurricane will remain. A drain has been constructed across the road in the vicinity of Industrial Terrace. This drain is expected to channel excess water away from business establishments, should the Tivoli Gully overflows because of the improper disposal of garbage and debris in the channel. The channel is currently being widened.
Mr. Shaw says that the new arrangements will be in place for the next two weeks and that motorists using Marcus Garvey Drive in the vicinity of Industrial Terrance should exercise caution and obey the posted warning signs.
In the meantime, work is expected to start tomorrow to reconstruct a section of the Gordon Town main road in St. Andrew. The road has been reduced to single lane resulting from the collapse of a retaining wall. Just over $27-million is to be spent over the next 90 days to have the structure rebuilt and the road reopened to accommodate two lanes of traffic.
