National Works Agency: Great number of roads cleared

TWO DAYS after the passage of Hurricane Dean and the National Works Agency (NWA) is reporting that 50 per cent of the 248 roadways which were affected islandwide by the onslaught are fully cleared.

According to a statement released by the agency, not only are some roads fully clear, but 89 others have been restored to single-lane access.

Among the roadways open are the airport road between Harbour View and the airport roundabout; the main road between Mandeville in Manchester and Scott's Pass and Tollgate in Clarendon and Kingston is open; and the roadway between Spanish Town in St. Catherine and Ocho Rios in St. Ann, as well as the Chalky Hill truck route between Golden Grove and Drax Hall are open.

Shelters

Up to press time, there were 157 shelters still open, housing 3,478 persons. According to Ronald Jackson, director general of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, this number is expected to fall as the week progresses.

Members of the public are encouraged to call the following numbers to makereports of blocked roadways in their communities which are not yet open: 968-0621, 383-1743-4 and 754-9094.
