Orange Bay to Windsor Castle Main Road in Portland to be Reopened Today

The National Works Agency (NWA) will, this evening, reopen the section of the Buff Bay main road that was closed to vehicular traffic. The roadway between Orange Bay and Windsor Castle in Portland was yesterday closed after strong wave action undermined a section of the sea wall resulting in a cavity under approximately half of the section of roadway. The NWA has since yesterday been working at the location in an attempt to protect the sea wall and prevent a complete collapse of the retaining structure.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says several truckloads of material, to include boulders and river shingle, have been used to fill the cavity that was created by the strong wave action. Mr. Shaw says the road will only reopen to single lane traffic as the work to protect the sea wall continues.

Heavy equipment is still working in the vicinity of the collapsed road and persons are being asked to exercise extreme caution when using the roadway while the work is in progress.
