The National Works Agency has reopened several roads across north-eastern parishes many of which were rendered impassable, resulting from flood rains last weekend. The agency is however advising motorists that the road from Belvedere to Hall Head and Danvers Pen in St. Thomas is closed to vehicular traffic, as two sections of the roadway have been damaged by the Morant Johnson River.

The NWA is advising motorists heading towards Danvers Pen and Hall Head to use the roadway from Morant Bay through Seaforth and into Danvers Pen.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says the Belvedere Road is one of 53 that have been affected by last weekend’s inclement weather. He says that all affected roads in the parish have been re-opened but that motorists should continue to exercise caution, especially in areas where land slippages had occurred.

Mr. Shaw says the NWA is still carrying out damage assessment in the parishes of St. Thomas, Portland, rural St. Andrew, Kingston, St. Catherine, St. Ann and St. Mary. However, preliminary estimates indicate damage to infrastructure of over $125-million.

In the meantime, the NWA has instructed contractors to reopen all critical drains that were blocked by the flood waters in the affected parishes. The agency has also commenced desilting work to the Bull Park and Chalky Rivers, where two bridges linking several communities were threatened.
