Marcus Garvey Drive

Effective this Monday, February 25, the National Works Agency (NWA) will be implementing traffic changes along Marcus Garvey Drive in Kingston.

Motorists traveling along Marcus Garvey Drive will no longer be allowed to make a right turn or a left turn on to 9thAvenue. Motorists exiting 9th Avenue will only be allowed to make a left turn onto Marcus Garvey Drive.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says motorists wishing to access the Newport West Complex will have to use 4th Avenue. Two right turning lanes will be provided to facilitate this movement.

He says motorists exiting the Newport West Complex and traveling towards East Avenue or Downtown, Kingston should turn right from 4th Avenue onto Marcus Garvey Drive.

According to Mr. Shaw, the traffic changes which will be in effect until August 2008 are to facilitate the upgrading work currently underway along Marcus Garvey Drive. The section of the corridor from 9th Avenue to East Avenue is being widened to facilitate six lanes of traffic. Significant drainage improvement work is also being done along the corridor as part of this effort.
