The National Works Agency (NWA) began works to replace a collapsed storm water culvert along a section of the Holland Bamboo roadway in St. Elizabeth on the weekend. The roadway is reduced to single lane traffic in order to facilitate the works. The restriction will remain in place between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily. The project is expected to be completed over the next week.
A collapsed concrete culvert will be removed as part of the works, which requires that the road surface be excavated. Subsequently, the new HDPE pipe culvert will be installed across one driving lane at a time in a bid to reduce the impact on the travelling public.
A new catch basin and headwall forms part of the overall improvement to the drainage system along the area. When completed, the new drainage feature should mitigate the customary quick and heavy flooding of the corridor during periods of heavy rainfall.
The Holland Bamboo project is one of seven similar type works to be undertaken in the parish of St. Elizabeth, over the upcoming weeks, under the GoJ’s 2019/2020 Maintenance of Secondary Roads Programme. The programme, which is valued at $12-million, will also see works being done along the Gutters to Tombstone, Giddy Hall, Middle Quarters, Luana to Scott Cove, Williamsfield to Fullerswood and Brompton to Cotterwood roadways.
The NWA continues to advise motorists and pedestrians, during this current period of works, to obey all posted warning and directional signs and the instructions of flag persons.
