Portmore, St. Catherine – The National Works Agency (NWA) is reporting that the Grange Lane Rehabilitation Project in Portmore, St. Catherine is 90% complete, with works on schedule to be finalised by March 2025. The project, which forms part of the Government’s Capital Expenditure Programme (CAPEX), is set to significantly improve traffic flow and overall commuting experience along the corridor.

Prime Minister the Most Honourable Andrew Holness, along with Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation with responsibility for Works, Robert Morgan, toured three sites along the corridor today to assess the project’s progress. They were accompanied by senior members of the NWA team, including Senior Director of Project Implementation Varden Downer, Richard McHargh, Director of Major Projects and Sherwin Dennis, Construction Manager.

The roadway is being upgraded from two lanes to four lanes to alleviate long-standing traffic bottlenecks along the heavily traversed corridor. The improvements also include the installation of waterlines in partnership with the National Water Commission (NWC), upgraded traffic signal systems, pedestrian rails catering to children and the disabled, and street-scaping elements to enhance the aesthetics of the space.

In addressing the media during the site visit, Senior Director of Project Implementation Varden Downer expressed confidence that the project will bring much-needed relief to residents and commuters in the surrounding areas.

“The Grange Lane corridor is a critical link between busy areas into Portmore. This upgrade will provide greater capacity and significantly improve traffic flow, especially during peak hours, and we are happy to report that our vulnerable citizens are taken into account with the inclusion of tactile sidewalks for the visually impaired to identify where they are and aid them when crossing the road.

The NWA continues to appeal to motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution when traveling within the construction zone and to obey the instructions of flag persons and warning signs.
