NWA to close the Grant's Pen Ford, St. Andrew for repairs, come Monday

The National Works Agency (NWA) is advising the motoring public and residents of the Grants Pen community, in St. Andrew, that a section of the Grants Pen Road, between Constant Spring Road and Fagan Avenue, will be closed to traffic as of Monday, September 29, 2014, for a period of three (3) weeks. This as the National Works Agency carries out repairs to the approach roads to the Grants Pen Ford. Manager of Communication and Customer Services, at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, says the approaches to the Ford have, over the past months, deteriorated extensively. Huge potholes have developed along the roadway due to the constant breaking down of the Asphaltic Concrete surface, resulting from water, carried on the tyres of motor vehicles that use the Ford. The rehabilitative works will include expansion of the fibre concrete section of the roadway by an additional 80 metres. The scope of the works also include excavation of the rutted sections of the corridor and the construction of expansion joints. Mr. Shaw says the use of fibre concrete in repairing the affected section of the corridor should reduce the level of maintenance required along this stretch due to water from the tyres of the motor vehicles. The rehabilitation of the Grants Pen Ford, which falls under the Agency’s Routine Maintenance Programme, through an allocation made by the Road Maintenance Fund (RMF), will be executed by Omara Paving and Construction Limited and is expected to be completed by Friday, October 17, 2014, at a cost of $5.4-million. The NWA advises motorists to use Shortwood Road as an alternative route to the Grants Pen Ford, during the period of works.
