The National Works Agency (NWA) will on Sunday, March 9, 2025, commence works to upgrade its traffic signal network in and around the city of Montego Bay St. James. These works will be carried out periodically, over the course of several weeks.
Currently, three critical intersections have been targeted for improvement. These are at Providence (Elegant Corridor), Leaders Avenue (Queens Drive) and Barnett Street (Westgate). The electronic signals at the targeted intersections have been defective and are in need of rewiring. In the case of the Barnett Street and Westgate intersection, the defect has caused the traffic signals to be out of service.
Community Relations Officer at the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, says the works forms part of the Agency’s effort to reduce congestion. Additionally, the project is intended to improve the traffic safety mechanisms along the targeted roadways, and to improve the efficiency of the traffic signals.
Ms. Ricketts says that the project involves cutting sections of the roadway to facilitate rewiring and the replacement of hardware components.
Motorists are being advised to obey the posted warning signs and instructions of flag persons.
