The National Works Agency (NWA) has commenced a major road safety improvement effort ahead of the 2014/2015 school year that starts in September. Under the programme some 90 pedestrian crossings in the vicinity of schools are being repainted and signs erected or replaced.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says some 200 pedestrian related signs are being erected, as part of the programme. The effort which started last month has already seen 28 crossings being repainted and the signs erected.

Mr. Shaw says that the programme which is valued at just over four million dollars is being implemented using a Force Account crew, which is being augmented by community representatives.

He says that the repainting of the 90 crossings will not be completed in time for the start of the school year, but should be completed by the end of the first week of October.

Operators of motor vehicles are being reminded to pay due care when approaching the vicinity of schools across the country and obey the posted signs. Ten children have so far been killed this year in vehicular accidents. Six of those killed were pedestrians.
