Works have now commenced to replace a bridge in the community of Nightingale Grove (aka Spring Village) in St. Catherine. The roadway was closed in 2023 after the existing structure was compromised. Physical works for the bridge replacement project commenced this week and is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw, says that as part of the project the old structure will be removed to facilitate the construction of a pre-stressed girder concrete bridge. He says the works will also include site clearance, the driving of piles to support the bridge frame, river training and protective works, the construction of approaches, along with road signs and road markings.
The new structure, valued at over $249 million dollars, will also have sidewalks for pedestrians, concrete wing walls and parapet walls. During the period of works, the alternative route from Grove Road to Big Farm will continue to be in use. Persons who use the roadway are being asked to exercise caution and to obey the instructions of posted signs.
