Technical Works underway for St. Mary roads

The National Works Agency (NWA) has commenced technical works relating to four locations in St. Mary where heavy rains last December caused significant damage, including the severing of two roads.

The road from Oracabessa to Union Hill at Ramble and the Hamilton Mountain main road are now impassable. The stretch from Trinity to Fontabelle and a section of the North-coast Highway, near Galina was also damaged. The roads were impacted by heavy rains between December 9 and 17, last year.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that the nature of the damage suffered at these locations require that the Agency does special designs as a pre-requisite to undertaking works.

Mr. Shaw says that among the features that have to be considered in determining the appropriate solution are the hilly terrain, the presence of underground streams and the high propensity of earth movements in the general areas.

The designs are expected to be completed within the next two weeks. These will inform as to the likely cost of repairs, which the NWA hopes to undertake, as soon as the necessary funding arrangements are determined by the government.
