NWA activates Emergency Operations Centre

NWA activates EOC

The National Works Agency (NWA) has activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC)and is advising that at least one roadway has so far being closed, resulting from the effects of Tropical Storm Gustav.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says persons wishing to contact the Centre can do so at: 754 – 9094, 968 – 0621, 383 – 1744 or 383 – 1743. The Agency may also be contacted through fax at: 926 – 5831.

Mr. Shaw says all the Agency’s teams have been put on high alert and will respond as early as possible to problems relating to the road network. Equipment have been pre-positioned along the Junction main road in St. Mary, Roselle in St. Thomas and the Maryland community along theNewcastle main road in St. Andrew.

In the meantime, Mr. Shaw says the Newcastle main road which was damaged during the passage of Hurricane Fay, two weeks ago has been closed. The roadway further deteriorated last night, following heavy rains relating to Tropical Storm Gustav.

Persons wishing to travel beyond the Jamaica Defence Force Camp inNewcastle are being advised to use the main road through Guava Ridge.

Mr. Shaw is also advising that traffic signals at several intersections in the Corporate Area have been de-activated. The intersections include that atSeaview Avenue and Lady Musgrave Road; Mountain View Avenue andArthur Wint Drive; Winchester Road and Hope Road, as well as Lady Musgrave Road and Old Hope Road.

The NWA has taken the traffic signals out of service, in order to protect the equipment from wind related damage.
