Work is now underway to reconnect the main road between Linstead, St. Catherine and Guys Hill, St. Mary, which was severed in the community of Dover Castle in May 2017, during heavy rainfall.
Following the major rain event, residents created a temporary road through a nearby farm. The National Works Agency (NWA) subsequently assisted in making this temporary road more accessible to all vehicles.
According to Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw, the affected section of the road, which runs parallel to the Rio Magno, is to be rehabilitated, following the completion of river training works which are now underway. The works are being done through a contract valued 49.2 million dollars.
He explains that the river training activities involve the construction of six reinforced concrete features, referred to as Diamonds. These will serve as energy reducers and assist in protecting the embankment forming the road. Boulders will also be used to protect the river embankments The measures will be applied to approximately 40 meters of the Rio Magno.
The project is expected to commence in early March and the works are to be performed within four months following which the temporary diversion of traffic will be discontinued.
