The National Works Agency (NWA) will be restricting vehicular access to Institution Drive in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth starting tomorrow, Saturday, June 29. The restriction will remain in place for the next three weeks.
The NWA’s community relations officer for the Agency’s Southern region, Howard Hendriks, explains that the restriction is to facilitate the installation of new drainage features along a section of the roadway. A reinforced concrete U-drain and steel grating will be constructed as part of this phase of the project.
On completion, the works should greatly improve drainage along the typically flood-prone area. During the period of restriction, vehicles seeking to access Institution Drive will be diverted onto Main Street or the Santa Cruz bypass.
The NWA started work on the 17-million dollar drainage improvement project in April. The activities also extend to a section of the Santa Cruz bypass. The project forms part of the Agency’s Capital ‘A’ Flood Damage Local Rehabilitation and Drainage Improvement Programme and should be completed by the end of October.
Road users are being reminded to obey all posted warning and directional signs and the instructions of flag persons while the works are in progress.
