The National Works Agency (NWA) is announcing that a section of the main road between Ulster Spring and Albert Town in in Southern Trelawny is now closed to vehicular traffic. The road has been closed near the community of Dutch Hill following heavy rains yesterday that caused the corridor to collapse.
Community Relations Officer for the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, says the road collapsed due to the recent burning of a culvert from beneath the road. The culvert which was fairly new was burnt by illicit bush fire.
Ms Ricketts says that the NWA team is now conducting an assessment of the damage in preparation for the restoration of access to this critical roadway. It is expected that a decision will be made before the end of the week on the plans for repairs.
In the interim, operators of small vehicles travelling from the direction of Albert Town, can use the Butt Up Town community road. This corridor cannot accommodate large vehicles. Operators of large vehicles travelling from the direction of Jackson Town and heading beyond Dutch Hill are advised to travel through Browns Town, Battersea and Lorrimers. The reverse obtains for persons travelling from the direction of Lorrimers with a destination beyond Albert Town.
