GOODENS RIVER, Westmoreland — The National Works Agency (NWA) has commenced a $3-million patching programme on several road sections across the parish of Westmoreland.

Community relations officer for the NWA's Western Region, Janel Ricketts, said approximately 1,800 square metres of roads are now being targeted for patching under the project.

She said among the corridors to receive attention are the main road from Goodens River to Glasgow, the stretch from Scotts Cove to Smithfield Bridge, and the Hertford to Flower Hill roadway.

In the meantime, work is continuing on the Townhead to Blackness roadway in the parish. This project which is done at a cost of $2 million involves the rehabilitation of 1.5 km of the roadway as well as the improvement of drainage features.

Ricketts said that the asphalting stage of the project is now complete, adding that the contractors are now focusing on constructing nine metres of cross drains, in order to significantly mitigate the incidence of flooding along the roadway.

The works which are slated to be completed within the next two weeks, form part of the NWA's thrust to improve the condition of the island's main road network, and flood control system.

"Motorists and residents, who use these roadways, will experience smoother driving conditions when these projects are completed," Ricketts noted.
