Bog Walk Gorge to close, effective July 4

Effective Monday, July 4, the Bog Walk Gorge in St. Catherine will be closed to vehicular traffic. The road will be closed for one month in order to facilitate the National Water Commission (NWC) completing its work on the multi-million dollar pipe-laying project.

During the period of closure, motorists wishing to travel from the direction of Bog Walk or Spanish Town are advised to use the alternative routes through Barry or Sligoville.

Minister of Transport and Works, Mike Henry who authorized the closure says major improvement works have been done along the Barry main road, which was in a deplorable condition. The NWC had requested the closure of the Gorge over six weeks ago, but this was denied by Minister Henry, who stated that the Barry main road had to be improved, before such approval could have been granted.

On the Minister Henry’s insistence, the NWC undertook the cost to repair sections of the roadway, which was in a deplorable condition. Minister Henry says he has travelled the route and is now confident that it is in a condition to serve as a suitable alternative, when the Gorge is closed.

The Transport and Works Minister says that the work of the NWC will be strictly monitored in order to ensure that the one month timeline for its completion is realized.
