Clifton PC Road to be Re-opened by the NWA

The National Works Agency (NWA) is to commence work tomorrow to reopen the Clifton parochial road in Hanover. The roadway which leads from Askenish to Mount Piece in the parish has been impassable since May 28, following a landslide that also partially covered a house.

The decision to start the process of re-opening the road comes against the background of a visit to Clifton on Friday by State Minister for Transport and Works, Honourable Richard Azan and Member of Parliament, Ian Hayles.

Minister Azan who issued the instructions for the road to be re-opened, explained that a technical assessment had to be done by the NWA, before a final decision was taken.

He says a technical team from the Agency that was dispatched after the landslide occurred has determined that the landslide was caused by oversaturation of the embankment. The mound of earth that now blocks the roadway can therefore be removed without endangering any lives.

Minister Azan says the clearing process will be executed over a three day period and should be completed by Wednesday of this week. The NWA is also expected to carry out some amount of terracing along the affected embankment in order to mitigate any further breakage.
