The National Works Agency (NWA) will next week commence emergency repairs on the damaged section of the sea wall in Black River, St. Elizabeth, located along High Street in the town.

The repair works costing over 31 million dollars will start on Monday June 17, 2013 and should be completed within sixteen weeks. Community Relations Officer for the National Works Agency Southern Region, Howard Hendriks says that the scope of works will include repairs to the sidewall and road embankment, construction of 70 metres of random rubble retaining wall, installation of Guardrails and the paving of the reinstated area of roadway with Asphaltic Concrete.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to obey the instructions of the flagmen since traffic will be reduced to single lane along this corridor. This section of the seawall was damaged by successive hurricanes and the roadway was in imminent danger of collapsing.

The roadway facilitates movement along High street, which is a major corridor linking the town of Black River to townships in Manchester and Westmoreland.

Mr. Hendriks says that if further erosion of the sea wall occurs, the roadway could become impassable, leading to major disruption in traffic especially with the pending hurricane season.
