NWA on St. Thomas demonstration

The National Works Agency (NWA) says plans are in motion for the rehabilitation of the Surge Island to Cedar Valley main road. The stretch which has been the scene of demonstrations over the last two days will form of major works to be undertaken on the over 25 kilometer stretch from Morant Bay to Cedar Valley.

Manager of Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says the project is now in the design phase and will be implemented as part of the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).

He says that the stretch is fraught with several challenges, including massive breakaways and low lying areas, which flood whenever it rains. These issues form part of the extensive due diligence that is now underway and that will help to guide the execution of the project.

Mr. Shaw says that the NWA accepts that there are sections of the corridor that are in need of attention. It is against that background he says that the NWA in last December spent some 10 million dollars carrying out patching activities in the area. More work is needed, but given the budgetary constraints, the Agency was not in a position to have this completed.

Mr. Shaw says that the NWA is currently reviewing its programmes and intends to do additional work on the corridor, in order to bring additional relief to motorists.
