The National Works Agency (NWA) is now undertaking a major effort aimed at restoring access to a section of the Moreland Hill roadway in Western Westmoreland. The affected section of the roadway falls along the Albany to Moreland Hill corridor.

The roadway has been closed since the passage of Tropical Storm Nicole in 2010. The corridor was severely eroded resulting in an approximately five meter drop. During the period of closure, the public has been using the alternative route through the nearby Delve Bridge Old Road.

Community Relations Officer at the NWA’s Western Region, Janel Ricketts, says that the project is being undertaken at a cost of approximately $33 million and involves the installation of a new box culvert, the construction of retaining walls, the filling and compacting of the affected section of the roadway with granular base material and asphalting of the area, using Asphaltic Concrete.

In the meantime, the NWA is executing repairs to the Morgan’s Bridge in the town of Grange Hill, Westmoreland. Sections of this bridge have been undermined overtime and the NWA is now working to repair same and mitigate further damage.

Ms. Ricketts says that the project is valued approximately $16 million and entails the construction and repair of retaining walls, the improvement of drainage infrastructure and repairs to the bridge rails.

The projects are being executed by local contractor Alcar Construction and Haulage Company Limited.
