The National Works Agency (NWA) is undertaking a programme of works geared at improving the safety of road users in the parishes of Portland, St. Mary and St. Ann. Under the programme, sections of selected sidewalks are being reconstructed and drains improved.

The programme got underway in December and to date works have been completed in several areas across the three parishes.

Community Relations Officer for NWA’s Northeastern Region, Natalee Bloomfield, says that under the programme, handrails have been  installed in Discovery Bay, St. Ann, while manhole covers and gratings have been replaced along roads in the three parishes, including Main Street in Gayle, St. Mary; Browns Town to Stewart Town in St. Ann, and Folly to Boundbrook in Portland. Sidewalk improvement works are now taking place at St. Margaret’s Bay and Boundbrook in Portland.

Ms. Bloomfield says the programme, which is valued at 7.5 million, is part of an islandwide $50 million Drainage Improvement Programme, which is being financed by the Road Maintenance Fund (RMF). The works are scheduled to be completed by end March 2014.

Other areas that have benefitted under the programme include the Richmond to Kendal and Gayle to Guy’s Hill main roads in St. Mary; Folly - Boundbrook - Allen Avenue; Hector’s River to Muirton and Rio Grande Bridge to Hope Bay in Portland.
