The National Works Agency (NWA) has commenced a major embankment recreation exercise in the community of Enfield in St. Mary. Access into and out of the community has been under threat for over a year, after flood waters in the Dry River, destroyed its embankment and with it a section of the road in the district of Junior Pen.

Work commenced last week and will see approximately 500 feet of the embankment of the river channel being recreated. The project which is valued at 22 million dollars is being implemented as part of the multi-billion dollar, Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).

The eight weeks project will also see protective works in the form of bunding and the planting of wild canes. These are to assist in the stabilization of the embankments.

In the meantime, work to replace the defective Dry River Bridge in the community is expected to start soon. The bridge was closed last year August by the NWA, after a routine inspection found that several of its members were severely compromised.

The bridge project which will get underway this month will see the current Truss Bridge being replaced with a Bailey Bridge.
