Traffic lights along Spanish Town Link Road still non-functional

The traffic lights along the Spanish Town Link Road in St. Catherine that have been non-functional since November 5 could be out of use for a while longer, as the National Works Agency (NWA) is without the required spares.

The signal, which facilitates motorists exiting and entering the Spanish Town leg of the East/West Toll Road was rendered inoperable after thieves stole the connecting cables.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says that just under 400 meters of cable was stolen. It will cost the NWA just under three million dollars to repair the system.

Mr. Shaw says that the NWA does not have any of the cables in its stores at this time and will have to source the material privately. This will have to be done in line with the government’s procurement rules and could take some time.

In the meantime, members of the pubic are being reminded to report any suspicious activities around traffic signals. The NWA will be using the technology it now has at its disposal to police the signals, but wants the public to assist in helping to make the roads safer for all users.
