The communities of Ginger House, Millbank and Bowden Pen in the Rio Grande Valley, Portland are once again accessible by motor vehicles. The road to these communities was reopened yesterday, following extensive work by the National Works Agency (NWA).

The communities with over 5000 residents have not had vehicular access since August 2008, when a section of the road in the district of Friday was washed away by the flood waters in the Rio Grande, during the passage of Tropical Storm Gustav.

Manager, Communication and Customer Services at the NWA, Stephen Shaw says while vehicular access has been regained to the communities, the work at Friday is not yet complete.

He explains that additional base work will be done, following which the area will be re-surfaced with Asphaltic Concrete. This bit of work is expected to be completed shortly.

Mr. Shaw says the reopening of the road to the over 5000 residents has been made possible through the multi-billion dollar Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP). The project has been undertaken at a cost of over 115 million dollars.
